New York City, the largest US city, is situated in New York State on New York Bay at the mouth of the Hudson River.  It is divided into five boroughs-Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Richmond.  The City is the nation’s leading seaport and one of the most important financial and business, manufacturing, communication and cultural hub in the country.  It is home to several large corporations and the New York Stock Exchanges.

Henry Hudson sailed into New York Bay on September 3, 1609.  His glowing reports of this great location served notice for the founding Dutch colonists who arrived in 1620. In 1625, New Amsterdam which is situated at the tip of Manhattan, became the capital of the newly established Dutch colony of New Netherland.  The following year the entire island of Manhattan was annexed to this new colony when it was bought from the Indians for the equivalent of $24.00. The area where the present New York is located was captured by the English for the Duke of York in 1664 and was promptly renamed as New York in his honor.  It became the first capital of US from 1789 to 1790. New York City gained strategic importance as a leading commercial and seaport city with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.  It started to turn into a multi-racial urban center with the influx of various ethnic groups to its shores at the start of the 20th century. Perhaps, the most notable, albeit tragic, point of history of the present New York City is the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center skyline on September 11, 2001.  The great people of this diverse and fascinating urban center have courageously moved forward with strong character and renewed resolve to recover from this fateful event where about 2,000 lives were lost. This dark episode of this City’s rather colorful history will always remain as a strong reminder and testament of the genuine acts of kindness and heroism of New Yorkers and the American nation as a whole.

The City of Lights, the Big Apple, the City that Never Sleeps-such endearing accolades bestowed to a great cosmopolitan is indicative of the immense and varied charm that this great City has.  No matter how many times you visit this tourist hotspot, every time you arrive to New York will always be a visit full of new discoveries. The city also boasts of a festive landscape festooned with colorful decorations and lively character. One of which is the Village Halloween Parade happening on October 31 at 7 pm.
