Nashville is the capital city of Tennessee and is located along the banks of Cumberland River. It is the site of Vanderbilt University and is a major center for religious education. A center of the recording industry for country and western music, the Country and Western Music Hall of Fame and Museum are situated here.
Although it is best known for its Country Music industry, the capital of Tennessee is also the regional hub of business, transportation and tourism. The area along the banks of the Cumberland River drew the first prehistoric settlers as early as 10,000 BC. Later, tribes including Cherokees, Chickasaws, and Shawnees used the area as hunting grounds. In the late 1600, French fur trading became a major activity in the area and a trading post was built near a salt lick north of downtown. Nashville was founded in 1779 and the area has produced two US presidents, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk. Jackson’s residence, the Hermitage, remains as of the most popular tourist draw of the city. In 1843, Nashville became the permanent capital of Tennessee.
Nashville can be really hot during the summer season, but it is not particularly in the fringes of the South. Here you can enjoy milder temperatures than what one might find in locations such as neighboring Mississippi. Temperature highs can be in the 90s but the atmosphere is not too humid as the Deep South making the hot weather more bearable and rains less frequent than some other Deep South cities. Spring and fall should be the best times to visit Tennessee with September temperatures hovering in the 70s and staying in the 50-60 degree range well into November.
Nashville is a great travel package of family-oriented attractions ranging from live music to fine art and a lot, lot more. The Grand Ole Opry is the main attraction of the city. It showcases regular performances by both famous and upcoming Country Music artists. Right next to it is a museum which boasts of rich collections dedicated to the country music greats who have performed there over the years. You should also visit the historic Ryman Auditorium on Fifth Avenue North, which was the original home of the Grand Old Opry. The Ryman still hosts live bands, and also holds exhibits that visitors can view during the day. After this, visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront park and visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Nashville is also renowned for its many parks offering a variety of fun activities. The Centennial Park along West End Avenue is home to a full-scale replica of the Parthenon and a museum. Visitors are entertained by free outdoor movies and big band dances during summer. A variety of art and craft fairs are held throughout the year, and in the early fall, the park is host to the Nashville Humane Association’s Dog Days celebration. Further away from downtown, the tree-covered ridges of both Radnor Lake State Park and Pearcy Warner Park offer miles of natural hiking trails.
