Myrtle Beach is a major tourist destination along the South Atlantic coast of South Carolina.  This tourist paradise is popularly known for its 60 miles of wide beaches and literally hundreds of golf courses.  It also boasts of excellent restaurants, highrise beachfront hotels, and outlet-style shopping.  The beach resort is also known as the Grand Strand. But the term does not actually refer to Myrtle Beach exclusively.  Several smaller towns to the north and south, which include Briarcliffe, Atlantic Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Murrel’s Inlet, Pawley’s Island, and Garden City, in addition to Myrtle Beach, make up what is known as the “Grand Strand”.  Primarily, Myrtle Beach is an ideal family vacation getaway.  About 14,000 visitors flock to its beaches annually simply to relax on the beautiful wide beach or have an activity filled adventure.

The Waccamaw and Winyah Indians were the first known inhabitants in the sandy beaches of South Carolina.  Proofs of their existence are several arrowheads and a tribal burial ground discovered in the area.  Remains of an Indian village were also discovered near Wachesaw Plantation. The beachfront property was subjected to sustained development after around 1900 when Burroughs & Collins Company, a timber-turpentine company with a lot of beachfront property, started constructing a railroad to the beach. They also built the first hotel, the Seaside Inn. Mrs. Burroughs named the town, Myrtle Beach because of the myrtle trees that grow abundantly there.

The tourist season expectedly coincides with the summer months, with the season peaking around 4th of July holiday and slowly declining from there. This tourist destination normally experiences the heaviest tourist arrivals in the last couple of weeks of May through the first few weeks of June when the local festivities called Bike Weeks happen.  All in all, the weather on Myrtle Beach can just about always be described as “nice” even in the months of December to February where the temperature rarely averages below 58 degrees F.  For beach lovers, July and August are the best months to visit, being in the middle of the summer with the highest temperatures for both air and water.

All visitors to Myrtle Beach should love its numerous golf courses.  It is one of the reasons for going, if not the only reason. This tourist hotspot boasts of some of the world renowned golf courses designed by well known golf course architects.  The TPC of Myrtle Beach was designed by Tom Fazio, considered one of the best of the non-traditionalist school.  The Dunes Golf Club is one of the Strands’ oldest courses, and represents a more traditional design by Robert Jones.  The “culture” aspect of the vacation should include a visit to Brookgreen Gardens at the southern end of the Grand Strand. This is a combination of lovely walk-through gardens, an outdoor sculpture “museum”, Low Country information, a small zoo, and a bit of history.  Finally, nature lovers should enjoy the experience of beautiful Huntington Beach State Park just south of Murrells Inlet, and riverboat cruises on the Intracoastal Waterway.
