Los Cabos collectively refers to the two towns located at the tip of Baja Peninsula, San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.  The laid-back and tranquil atmosphere of this exotic tourist destination is the big reason many are lured to visit the resort. Yet, San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas each project quite a divergent aura and character.  Cabo San Lucas represents a spirited version of Los Angeles lifestyle while San José del Cabo retains its traditional and tranquil Mexican color.

Great sportfishing has brought Los Cabos in the tourist map.  Golf, however, has become the major attraction of this exotic tourist destination.  Since 1940, Los Cabos has been a favorite destination of vibrant hordes of cruisers, fishermen, divers, and adventurers. During the 80s, the Mexican government, in recognition of Los Cabos’ potential as a tourist hub, invested heavily in new highways, airport facilities, golf courses, and modern marine facilities.  A major project, Transpeninsular Highway 1, also referred to as “The Corridor”, paved the way for spectacular growth of Los Cabos.  This road network is the centerpiece of the great strides in the development of this tourist hotspot.  A travel on this four lane stretch connecting Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is an awesome experience of cliff-top vista of beaches and coves.  Los Cabos is an upscale vacation getaway as most of the new hotel and resort facilities that operate in the area are the luxury types.  Despite the increase in the supply of rooms, prices have not significantly adjusted downward.

Peak season starts in the middle of November until the end of May.  The heaviest tourist arrivals are normally seen during the Christmas week; the months February to March, when Carnival is held; and during spring break.  The highlight of the spring break festivities starts during the opening of the International Bikini Open and the Cabo San Lucas Off-Road Race. Other top draws of this exotic place are the Culinary Festival in December, February’s Todos Santos Art Festival, and the whale-watching events happening in November through March.

For a well organized tour plan, Los Cabos is divided into three distinct areas, José del Cabo; Cabo San Lucas; and the Corridor. San José del Cabo is renowned for its narrow twisting street lined with 18th-century colonial buildings that open into broad plazas.  Plaza Mijares, with a twin-spire cathedral serving as background, is the focal point of this historical landmark.  The adjacent streets play host to several upscale galleries, artisan shops, and fine restaurants.  A further distance towards the main beach will bring you to the open-air Cactimundo Botanical Garden.  From here to the beach spreads the tranquil wildlife reserve Estero San José (open dawn to dusk; free), once a pirate ship hideout and today home to 250 species of tropical birds and plants; it’s a rich area for kayaking, birdwatching, and wildlife sightings.

Cabo San Lucas is more of a party hotspot.  It has fewer of the historical landmarks of which San José del Cabo is known for.  Its main beach, El Médano hugs Bahia San Lucas for several miles.  It’s most active in the evening with festive moods ranging from the chic to raucous.  Cabo San Lucas hosts a number of watersports concessions providing everything from parasailing to windsurfing.
