Los Angeles is a city and seaport in South California on the Pacific coast. It’s surrounded by vast mountain ranges, deep valleys, forests, desert and miles of coastline on the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1781 by Franciscan missionaries, it was made the capital of Mexican California in 1845 but was later captured by US forces in the following year. Over the years it has incorporated many neighboring towns so that today it comprises a large territory of industrial and urban complex. It is the center of the US film and television industry, which attracts many tourists to the city.
Los Angeles can be visited anytime as it is generally warm and sunny all year round.
However, January and February are the months when there are more rains, so come prepared just in case. May is the month characterized by the weather condition termed as ‘marine layer’, a cloudy overcast which may affect the beach and first mile or so of the coastal strip, especially in the mornings.
Today, when we talk of Los Angeles, we usually refer to an area that extends beyond its normal boundaries. This sprawling megalopolis extends to as far as Santa Monica, Burbank, Pasadena and Long Beach, with West Hollywood and Beverly Hills, both independent cities, culturally very much a part of the city itself.
Travelers to the city should include a tour to the famous Hollywood Boulevard. The world renowned tourist attractions in the city are found here. This includes the Walk of Fame for its stars, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre for its hand and foot prints. Tourists are also wowed by the Hollywood plaza for shopping and entertainment, the Wax Museum, and the Ripley’s Believe of Not.
Travelers should also take a trip to Mulholland Drive. This famous avenue, a popular setting of many movies, provides one of the most breathtaking view of the City. Be enthralled with over 40 celebrity homes while touring America’s most famous Street Rod Limo, Santa Monica Venice and Marina de Rey. Another “must-see” is El Pueblo, also known as Olvera Street. This historic landmark of LA and the city derives its name from the mission established here. The street is a cultural showcase of the oldest buildings in the city and is open to the public. The place also offers the opportunity for visitors to sample the cuisine of a number of Mexican restaurants and indulge in some shopping activities in retail outlets that operate in the area. For some great family fun activities, visitors could try out numerous theme and amusement parks. The four major amusement parks are Disneyland Resort, Universal Studios, Six Flags Magic Mountain and Knotts Berry Farm.
While LA has been more popularly known as the center of the world’s entertainment industry, the city is also a grand showcase of varied attractions and events from prestigious art museums and galleries, fabulous theaters to modern architecture. Tourist should get a view of the extensive collections at the J. Paul Getty Center and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Also include in your itinerary a visit to the La Brea Tar Pits on Museum Row and then check out the trendy shops on Melrose Avenue.
