Kauai Island is located in northwest Hawaii. It was the first Hawaiian island visited by Captain James Cook in 1778. The highest point is at Mt. Waialeale rising to about 5100 ft. This 550-square mile paradise offers a distinct image of diversity landscape. Kauai has a windward and a leeward side. The tradewinds usually come from the northeast bringing moisture-laden clouds that eventually run into the funnel-shaped Mt. Waialeale where they release their precious raindrops and Kauai’s most important source of fresh water. As the clouds move inward, they dry out and by the time they reach the west side, very little rain is left. This gives the distinct disparity in landscape between the north shore, it being the wettest, greenest, and most lush, while the west side is the driest and most “arid” part of the island. Don’t expect it to look like a desert though; the west shore is still green!
The price for all this lush greenery on the North shores is that it rains more. In fact, Mt. Waialeale is the wettest spot on earth with an average rainfall at 440 inches per year. But visitors are advised not to let the fear of rain spoil their vacation. The southern and western shores are usually drier, warmer and have calmer seas. There are actually some arid conditions on the south shore and you will see an occasional cactus there.
Kauai, known as the Garden Island, is the least commercially developed among the Hawaiian islands. Breathtaking waterfalls, scenic drives and more than 60 beaches dot the island landscape. Visitors can pleasantly discover great sites for snorkeling while others offer child-friendly tidal pools and some are perfect for all kinds of water sports. Other outdoor activities include hiking the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coastline, taking a tour to Waimea Canyon and experiencing life on a sugar plantation at Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

The place boasts of a wide playground and picnic benches, with two-large-rimmed pools which create calm, shallow waters, perfect for kids to frolic and have some fun. Visitors will surely get a blast out of a great inner-tubing ride through Kauai backcountry. This thrilling ride is about an hour through open areas as well as cave-like tunnels.
