Japan is a country in East Asia, consisting of a series of islands lying between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. The country comprises four main island, Honshu, Kyushu, Hokkaido and Shikoku, and thousands of smaller islands. They have long indented coastlines and much of the land is mountainous, with the highest mountain, the iconic Mt. Fujiyama, rising more than 12,000 ft. The population is a mixed Malay, Manchu, and Korean descent; with the original inhabitants, the Ainu, surviving in small numbers in Hokkaido. The country is divided into eight regions- Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu, which are further divided into 47 prefectures. Put together, the total land mass is just about the same as California.
The months of July to August are very hot and humid ay may not be the best times to enjoy the beauty of the island paradise as most might not have enough energy to go sightseeing. The best time to go is during April for the cherry blossoms. In May, the weather is warm and can be a little humid. June is the rainy season. From October into the beginning of November, days can be warm but the nights are cool.
To an outsider, Japan is a mystery. The safety, cleanliness and hospitality usually jump out at most visitors. However, most of the perceptions about their society may not necessarily be rooted in reality. A little understanding of Japanese society can help us understand and enjoy its genuine beauty. Japan is seen by most outsiders as an enigma. The country is a study in contrasts and contradictions. It is where you find an interesting mix of the past with the future.
Japanese culture stretches back millennia yet it has successfully adopted the modern creations known to mankind. In fact, Japan is an intricate blend of East and West. Its cities are extremely westernized- more so than others- but beyond the first impression one will pleasantly discover that there is very little about this Asian nation that would make you fill that you are in the West. But, then again, this place is also so different from other Asian nations. Although it borrowed much from China in its early development, including Buddhism and its writing system, the island nation remained steadfastly unique from the rest of the world throughout much of its history. Because of this unique synthesis of East and West into their culture, a visit to Japan would be one great and unique revelation. Thus, the more you experience Japan, and the longer you stay, you discover more new things about this “Land of the Rising Sun”. For most of visitors, the constant discovery of new things is one of the most fascinating aspects of being here.
Japan is often thought of as the most modern country in the world, and in many ways it is. Yet behind the glitz and glamour of the neon lights and robot dogs, you’ll find a deeply traditional culture, steeped by a rich history of a very proud people.
